One of the great get away experiences from Princess' private island is to get off the beaten track for a two hour dune buggy safari. Comfortable clothing, sun protection and secure flat shoes are recommended to make this adventure even more memorable. Don't forget your camera because you'll surely want to capture each unforgettable moment.
After an informative safety briefing, you'll don your helmet and follow your guide to the southern part of the island. Along the way, your guide will point out areas of interest, as well as the island's exotic flora and fauna and you'll learn how European settlers, known as the Eleutheran Adventurers, arrived in 1648 from Bermuda seeking religious freedom.
As you explore the unspoiled beauty of south Eleuthera, you'll traverse a landscape of low, rounded limestone hills, sometimes rising up 100 feet, set against a backdrop of turquoise water and sapphire blue sky. Keep your camera handy as you may see any one of the 223 species of birds that call this island home, many travel from far, during the winter to escape the wrath of the deep cold.
Continuing south, you'll head towards the historic (and some say, haunted) Bannerman Town, named for Sir Alexander Bannerman, governor of the Bahamas during the 1850s. Agriculture was once a mainstay on the island and during the early 18th century, slaves were brought in and sold here. Among the ruins is an auction house that stands as a silent reminder of the somber chapter in the island's history.
The southernmost tip of the island is home to Lighthouse Beach. This out-of-the-way world gem boasts an unexpected treat of beautiful pink sand. The Atlantic and Caribbean waters converge here, which crushes microscopic sea creatures called foraminifera. Their bright pink shells are pulverized and washed ashore resulting in a shimmering blush color. Once you arrive you can climb out of your buggy for excellent photo shots, get to feel the clean, powdery pink sand between your toes and absorb the picturesque views from the top of the historic old lighthouse.
Back on the road, you'll follow your guide to the ruins of the Anglican Church of the Assumption which was built by slaves in the 18th century, additional old ruins of houses, marks what used to be the quaint site of Bannerman Town at that time.
The final stop of your off-road adventure is the Princess Cays® Wishing Well. Here, you'll get a chance to drop in a coin and make a wish?perhaps it's to come back and spend a longer time discovering more of the hidden treasures of Eleuthera. Then, with the incredible imagery and unforgettable history from this wonderful road trip in mind, you'll enjoy an idyllic ride back to Princess Cays.
